Welcome to Mountain Education...

Forester PassBack in the ‘70s and ‘80s, while thru hiking the Pacific Crest and Continental Divide Trails, owner, Ned Tibbits, encountered many ill-prepared hikers suffering miserably because of poor preparation, haste, and a lack of mountain skills.

Therefore, Mountain Education was created to teach people how to prepare for enjoyable trips of their own and how to do the skills needed to accomplish them Dusy Basin, Red Line Routesafely. It is our desire that everyone who wishes to experience the mountains be able and equipped to do so in order to find as much joy there as we do!

Ned Tibbits, who is the school’s Director and chief instructor, brings a wide variety of personal achievements to the benefit of his students. He hiked the Pacific Crest Trail in 1974 while yet 17, graduated from UC Davis, worked as a Backcountry Wilderness Ranger for Sierra National Forest, studied post-graduate at Stanford, worked as a Ski Patrolman at Northstar-at-Tahoe, Bicycle camped 5,000 miles in Europe, hiked the Continental Divide in 1980, worked as a Paramedic for three years, and created two thriving businesses, Pacific Crest Custom Builders and Mountain Education.
